Squash is a game of passion, a game of energy. It is a kind of ball sport usually played by two or four players. It was first played in England in 1830 and is now a worldwide game recognized as a possible future Olympic sport. It can be played indoors as well as outdoors in glass courts. There are separate competitions in squash like male-male or female-female. Mixed gender matches are usually only in the leagues.
Squash is among a variety of games practiced in Pakistan. Pakistan dominated squash like no other country in the world, the domination lasting for the best part of 5 decades. During the reign of Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan in the 80s and 90s, squash in Pakistan reached incredible peaks of success, although they were hardly the first players to excel in the game. Hashim Khan, a former squash coach in the British Army, was the first Pakistani to dominate the sport. Of all Pakistani squash players, Jahangir Khan is considered by many to be the greatest player ever the grace a squash court. He is a six time winner of the Squash World Open and has also won the British open a record ten times. Recently, Pakistan won the 2016 World Team Junior Squash Championships after beating defending champions Egypt in the final by 2-1
Pakistan host a number of international squash tournaments and have many professional training centres around the country like Punjab squash complex. Pakistani squash players still have a big presence in both the men’s and women’s games. Pakistan men’s national squash team is represented by black color and is coached by Jamshed Gul khan under the supervision of the Pakistan Squash Federation which is a governing body for squash in Pakistan regionally affiliated with Asian Squash Federation. Among the talented women players of Pakistan is Maria Toorpakai Wazir who became the first tribal Pakistani girl in international squash tournaments, turning professional in 2006.
